Congressman Alcee Hastings was a representative from Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 until his death on April 6, 2021 (103rd-117th Congresses). Before Congress, Hastings was a District Court judge in Florida. He was the first African American federal judge in the state of Florida. In Congress, Hastings served on the Foreign Affairs/International Relations; Merchant Marine and Fisheries; Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; Post Office and Civil Service; Science; and Rules committees. He was chair of the Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process on the Rules Committee. Hastings earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology and botany from Fisk and received his Juris Doctor from Florida A&M University College of Law.
