Congresswoman Eva Clayton served as a representative of North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1992 to 2003 (102nd-107th Congresses). She was the first African American woman to be elected to Congress from North Carolina. Her committee assignments included the Agriculture, Small Business, and Budget committees. She also served as co-chair of the House Democratic Policy Committee during the 104th Congress. Before her tenure in Congress, Clayton served as director of the University of North Carolina Health Manpower Development Programs and assistant secretary for community development with the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Community Development. She received a bachelor’s degree from Johnson C. Smith University and a master’s degree from North Carolina Central University.
