Congressman Alton Waldon represented New York’s 6th Congressional District from 1986 to 1987 (99th Congress). Before his congressional service, Waldon served in the New York State Assembly and New York State Senate. During his Congressional term, Waldon served on the Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on Small Business. He was also very interested in U.S. relations with South Africa. Waldon and other Black members led the fight to override President Ronald W. Reagan’s veto of a bill calling for sanctions against South Africa. Waldon left Congress in January 1987 and was appointed to the New York state investigation commission. Later, he won a seat in the New York State Senate and accepted a judicial appointment to the New York court of claims in New York City. Waldon earned a bachelor’s degree from John Jay College and a Juris Doctor from New York Law School.
